Rest in order to Work

It was the LORD who declared one day in seven to be holy, distinct from the other six days, set apart for divine service and sacred assembly (Lev. 23:3). The sanctity of the sabbath (reflected in keeping the day distinct from other days of the week) regularly reminded the covenant people that it was God who sanctified them, removed from them the stain of sin, and set them apart for divine service. . . . The sabbath day is to be, for God’s children, a necessary day of consecration so that the work we do the other six days of the week may be a pleasing aroma to the Lord.
