Complementary Work & Rest

Work and sabbath are not presented as opposites in the Scriptures; rather they complement one another. For six days of the week humankind is to do all its work—the raising of families and the building of culture. This is to be done in the spirit of worship (a core meaning of abad), glorifying God. The seventh day is to be a ceasing (the root meaning of the Hebrew word sabbath) from “everyday” work (as important as it is!) so that God’s people may focus upon the sacred work of worship. The day is to be hallowed—set apart. It is to be significantly different from the other days of the week.
