True Earthiness

Man was originally taken from the ground, and it seems he was specially created to interact with his namesake through cultivation and culturative acts. Even after the Fall, this vital “working” relationship remains central to what it means to be human. In fact, the sting of God’s punishment meted out on Cain is Cain’s total estrangement from the ground, leaving him a “groundless” wanderer upon the earth. It may be said, then, that mankind is most at home when he is engaged in cultural activities—when he is free to interact with the earth: guiding and shaping the marvelous raw material from which man himself was take and shaped.
